Create Together
Embracing Art and Community at St. Mary Hornsey Rise
In March 2022, St. Mary Hornsey Rise launched a heartfelt community project named "Create Together." Held every Wednesday from 4 to 6 pm, this workshop provides a welcoming space for adults and occasionally parents with young children to explore their creative sides in a supportive environment.
The aim of "Create Together" is to foster artistic diversity, boost confidence, and offer a relaxing retreat from daily pressures. Designed for beginners, the workshops emphasize that everyone can be creative, regardless of experience. Participants are encouraged to slow down, reconnect with their creative selves, and enjoy the process of making art.
"Create Together" creates a non-competitive, non-judgmental atmosphere. The focus is on joy and connection, rather than perfection or technical skill. Mistakes are seen as valuable, and kindness is a core principle. This helps participants feel at ease and embrace challenges.
Embracing St. Mary’s motto, "Come as you are, do what you can," the workshops welcome everyone, ensuring that each person feels valued and capable, no matter their background or skill level.
Since its inception, "Create Together" has hosted a variety of workshops, including:
- Introduction to Pottery and Hand Building with Clay
- Weaving with mixed materials
- Sewing Projects: patchwork, embroidery
- Art Games, Painting, and Collaging
- Card Making, Christmas Decorations
- Printing making
- Papier mâche
To name a few….
These activities highlight the diverse artistic expressions encouraged at "Create Together."
The project owes its success to Tamsin Merchant, the vicar of St. Mary Hornsey Rise, who welcomed and supported "Create Together" from the start. Jackie Barnes has also been invaluable, providing encouragement and a weekly supply of tea and biscuits, adding a comforting social element.
A few dedicated individuals, like Florence and Elaine Clark, have attended since day one, and we are deeply grateful for their ongoing help and support too.
Every session is a chance to unwind and make meaningful connections. By valuing each person's unique contributions, "Create Together" has become a cherished part of life at St. Mary Hornsey Rise, enriching lives and strengthening the community bond.
